traditional ikat fabrics employ a highly complex hand dyeing technique that requires the artisan to map out the entire design of a fabric on loose threads before they are placed on a loom. during the dyeing process, the threads are tightly wrapped in areas where they do not want the dye to penetrate. double ikat is rare as it requires both the warp fibers - lengthwise yarns on the loon and yarns that are woven over and under the wraps to be dyed in this fashion prior to stringing on the loon where the yarn is hand woven.
